My best friend from high school finally married his longtime girlfriend, and the wedding was the occasion of the year for the people in our circle. It was a happy day of celebration, and I couldn’t think of a better cigar to share with the lucky newlyweds than one of my personal favorites, the Padrón 1926 Serie No. 9 Maduro.
@PadronCigars achieved something truly special and remarkable in the 1926 Serie, and the No. 9 Maduro is the culmination of the line. The Nicaraguan puro offers flavors and qualities that other cigars strive to attain, but never quite reach. Clipping the cap on this dark, espresso-colored box-pressed stogie is a bit like opening a Christmas present you’ve been looking forward to for a very long time. The anticipation is eclipsed by the experience. The cigar is well packed – no soft spots, and is almost rock hard.
The cigar starts off exceptionally smooth, with flavor notes of chocolate and some pepper, both of which are joined with a creaminess that heightens the flavors. As we smoked, we noticed earthiness, and some berry notes (maybe cherry?) enter the profile, giving the cigar a hint of sweetness. Later, hints of leather overtook the pepper, and a bit of allspice and with cocoa. The cigar stayed cool throughout the smoke, with no bitterness or harshness, heating up only as we got closer to the nub.
I’ve always enjoyed the perfect draw and burn of Padrón cigars, especially in the 1926 Serie, and this No. 9 did not disappoint. With the perfect balance of strength and body (both of which transitioned from medium-full to full during the smoke) I would rate the cigar a 96. One of the best cigars I’ve ever enjoyed.
